BUSINESS ALIGNMENT & TURNAROUND
QUESTION => Manufacturers – Are you achieving 500% + on Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE)? Are you achieving the planned ROI?
This week, we will focus on the management domain criticality of S.W.O.T (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threat analysis. We continue to dive into their affect on achieving business goals and growth.
SWOT assessments are often performed at a high level and really do not dig into the grass roots of why they are what they are. Let’s first focus on the first two – strengths & weaknesses (S&W). Quality Assurance techniques of analysing such business aspects are a great way to assess this subject matter. It is about digging deeply into why your organization has certain strengths and weaknesses.
Likely the product and services you provide are part of or directly related to these two factors. One has to delve into the product design, manufacturability, durability, performance, etc… These elements drive strengths and weaknesses that the market sees.
Incremental to that, S&W are resident in every function of the organization. Asking yourselves how well does your workforce know the product and how it is manufactured? How knowledgeable is your team with respect to the product and services? We are finding more and more, and perhaps because of resource desperation to support the business, the training and knowledge base of product is becoming less and less. This is a key factor driving S&W. Have a think about that.
When the LYNXBMG team performs a business management health assessment and SWOT analysis, we delve into the teams knowledge base and awareness of how the product and/or services demonstrate strengths and weaknesses of the company. It ties back into the strategy of the business and why your company manufactures what it does for the market.
Moving onto Opportunities and Threats (O&T). Opportunities are not unlike risks. Assessing opportunities is the same process and approach to risk management. Focused first on product and services, opportunities are abundant within every functional discipline of the manufacturer. How the product is produced, what tools are needed to improve OEE and reduce cost? Are your processes and operations well constructed to maximize quality output? The list is extensive and am sure you are getting the idea of where we are going. Question everything even if it seems okay. Opportunities are everywhere.
Threats naturally will be revealed with an Opportunity assessment. Awareness of such threats becomes opportunity. This applies to internal elements of your organization and to external stakeholders as well. A good stakeholder analysis will also provide insight into threats that need to be managed. In some cases, threats can be managed in a passive manner or with tactical measures needed to achieve your organizations objectives and goals.
Having a structured SWOT process is key. LYNXBMG and their partner rPM3 Solutions Canada have an automated system to help you with this management process. It is not difficult in the end, it takes budgeted time and effort to do it. Most companies believe that they do not have the time, yet, the assessment and actions thereafter will most certainly pay dividends in freeing up time to think strategically and tactically for the betterment of the organization.
We look forward to your thoughts on this subject and we hope you are intrigued to stay tuned over the next week as we cap off our discussions on Business Alignment and Turnaround principles. Next weeks focus will be on the WORKFORCE domain and how that affects aligning the business.
